Among the international collaboration, since 2021, IIT has established an interdisciplinary PhD program in collaboration with the Open University (OU; Milton Keynes, UK), as an OU Affiliated Research Centre at IIT (ARC@IIT). This PhD program awards Doctorates in Health, Sustainable, and Human Technologies with research activities conducted within the framework of the OU Affiliated Research Centre @IIT in Genova.

Program
The PhD in Health, Sustainable and Human Technologies is an outstanding program that offers a comprehensive curriculum consisting of taught modules, including disciplinary subjects, transferable skills such as IP protection and commercialization, as well as energy supply, sustainability, mental health, ageing, and epidemics. These modules can be delivered either on-site or remotely to facilitate learning for all students.
The program has a maximum duration of four years, and an intermediate examination must be passed before the end of the first year to allow progression to the next stages of the program.

We welcome applications from exceptional candidates who are interested in pursuing research at the forefront of nano, life and robotic technologies under the guidance of internationally renowned scientists. Below is a list of available PhD projects, including a brief description, specific requirements, and contact details of the main supervisor, along with the expected starting date.

To be admitted into the ARC program, you should have a Master's level degree that is equivalent to a 4/5-year undergraduate MSc/MChem/MEng-style degree or a postgraduate Masters in the British system or a second-level university degree in Italy. If successful, and if your degree was not awarded in Italy, you will be required to provide a statement of comparable value (Statement of Validity, "Dichiarazione di Valore" or "Attestato di Comparabilità" in Italian) issued by the Italian Consular Offices of the country of study.

You should have a grade corresponding to an upper second class (2.1) or a merit in the UK system or 100/110 in the Italian system. Candidates with lower grades but with international publications or specific expertise are encouraged to contact potential supervisors before applying.

If your first language is not English, a valid IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System) is required. The minimum acceptable score is an overall 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any of the four categories.

All applications will be first checked for eligibility. Invalid or insufficient IELTS, absent referee details or insufficient grades are reasons for rejection at this stage. The applications will then be short-listed based on the ranking in essential and desirable criteria. Short-listed applicants will receive an application package that describes all subsequent steps in the recruitment process. Short-listed candidates will attend an interview (live or online) on a date of mutual convenience. The interview will comprise a 15-minute presentation in English, followed by a 20-minute questioning. Candidates will be selected based on the combined ranking of interview performance and application. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified.

Successful applicants will be required to submit the necessary documents for final registration to the Open University. IIT will then cover the registration fees and provide a gross salary of €18,700 per annum for the duration of the student's registration in the graduate program.
